Oslo is the capital and largest city of Norway, at the northern end of the Oslofjord with green hills and mountains on the other sides. Its municipal population is about 724,000 (2025). Wikipedia dates its founding as a city to 1040, when it was known as Anslo.

What to see and do

Oslo Opera House

Opened on 12 April 2008 and designed by Snøhetta. The roof slopes down to ground level and can be walked on, which makes the building itself a public viewpoint.

Vigeland sculpture park

In Frogner Park, with 212 bronze and granite sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. The Monolith is 14.12 m tall with 121 figures. The park covers about 45 hectares and is open to the public at all times.

Viking Ship Museum, Bygdøy

Houses the Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune ships. Wikipedia says it has been temporarily closed since September 2021, with reopening stated as 2027, so check before you plan around it.

The fjord islands

Visit Norway lists island hopping in the Oslofjord as a summer activity.
