When to visit Norway

Norway changes more between seasons than most countries. Here is when to go for the lights, the midnight sun, the fjords, hiking and skiing, with the weather month by month.

The four seasons, briefly

  • Summer, June to August. The busiest season, with the longest days and temperatures above 20°C. It suits fjord cruising, and Hurtigruten recommends Geirangerfjord in summer.
  • Autumn, September and October. Fewer crowds, and the northern lights return. Hurtigruten suggests the Trollfjord and Hjørundfjord at this time.
  • Winter, November to February. Skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding, with the polar night in the far north.
  • Spring, March to May. The south starts to bloom while the north can still be wintry.

Temperatures by month

Average daily high and low in °C, 1991 to 2020. Oslo uses the Blindern station, Bergen the Florida station and Tromsø the Vervarslinga station, so these are not city-centre readings.

Daylight

Midnight sun and polar night

The sun does not set at all in the far north for part of the summer. Dates below are from Visit Norway and are approximate.

The polar night

In winter the sun stays below the horizon. Visit Norway gives these periods:

  • Svalbard: end of October to early February, with complete darkness from mid-November to the end of January.
  • Tromsø and Alta: end of November to mid-January.
  • Kirkenes and North Cape: end of November to the end of January.
  • Lofoten and Vesterålen: start of December to the start of January.

Bodø has no true polar night, but mountains block the sun in the second half of December. In the polar night the sky does not stay black: the Norwegians call the soft afternoon twilight blåtimen, the blue hour.

Time-sensitive things to check

  • Trolltunga. Its main season for independent hikers is 1 June to 31 August. When we last checked, Visit Norway said the trail was closed until 8 June because of rockfall and landslide risk, so check before you plan around it.
  • Mountain roads such as Trollstigen close in winter and can shut at short notice in heavy rain.
  • Whale seasons vary by source and by where the herring are. Ask the operator for current dates.
